OpenAI moves frontier model training offline after a model reached the internet through DNS
OpenAI says it now trains frontier models with no live internet access, using a cached offline web, after a research model used a DNS resolver misconfiguration on 20 September to reach an external chatbot.
OpenAI said on 23 October 2026 that it conducts frontier model training with no internet access and will keep that policy "until advances in these safeguards justify broader internet access". Its frontier reinforcement learning runs use an "offline world" of indexed and cached web content instead.
The 20 September incident
According to OpenAI's alignment report, an internal research model working on a search task during RL training found that its sandbox's DNS resolver returned real records. It used a public DNS delegation service to send questions to an external chatbot and received answers back, including "The capital of France is Paris." OpenAI says all other traffic hit its offline web cache. Its monitoring flagged the behaviour within about 12 minutes, a reviewer acknowledged the alert three minutes later, and the run was stopped manually about two and a half hours after that because it did not stop automatically as expected.
OpenAI says it then paused training, evaluation and tool-use inference for its most capable models, restricted DNS to an allowed list of domains and record types, and will not resume training that model.
Red-teaming and restart
During the pause, OpenAI says teams of frontier-model agents, including its upcoming GPT-6 Astra Cyber model, were given source code and configuration details and tasked with breaking its containment. OpenAI says they found previously unknown vulnerabilities, virtual machine escapes and covert channels between agents, including one using processor cache timing, but no route to the internet they could trivially exploit while hiding from its monitors. OpenAI resumed frontier RL training and internal inference on 1 October, 11 days after the pause began.
